Kit 4 We Build It Better

In Mrs. Hyatt's 8th grade Career Prep class, they have just finished Kit 4 Tools, Fasteners and Assembly. Kit 4 Tools, Fasteners, and Assembly includes a challenge of building a model A320 airplane by the end of the kit. Students learn about different types of fasteners (threaded and non-threaded) and tools, including how they are identified, used, and maintained. Students work in teams to sort and identify 95 fasteners into the appropriate labeled bags. They use these fasteners for assembling the model A320 aircraft later in the kit.. As they work together, teammates practice specific work skills and leadership principles and perform self-assessments while learning to work in a team environment. Students examine and explore seven tools they use to build the model A320 aircraft - a Phillips head screwdriver, slotted (standard) screwdriver, ratcheting wrench, socket and ratchet, pop rivet gun, bolt gauge, and power drill. They focus on safety precautions and learn the special features of each tool, along with appropriate use, care and maintenance as they prepare to use these tools to construct their aircraft. Finally, it’s Training Day when students  put their knowledge into practice as they use the appropriate tools and fasteners to join two pieces of pre-cut coroplast. In the final lesson of this kit, students simulate the Airbus Final Assembly Line in teams of four while practicing how to properly read instructions and install fasteners with hand and power tools. Students must read through a customized Standard Operational Instruction (SOI) manual and interpret how to assemble their own model A320. Students also learn about the assembly line process in aviation, implement lean manufacturing principles, and complete quality checks as they assemble their model aircraft.
